£41m star ‘expected’ to recover for World Cup at Old Trafford

Manchester United defender Raphael Varane will not play for the club again ahead of the World Cup, according to injury expert Ben Dinnery.

The 29-year-old was absent from the Red Devils’ win over West Ham last time out after he was forced off the field through injury during the 1-1 draw at Chelsea.

What is the latest news related to Varane?

Varane was visibly upset as he left the pitch at Stamford Bridge, presumably fearing that his hopes of playing for France in the upcoming exhibition event in Qatar were in tatters.

However, United manager Erik ten Hag addressed the centre-back’s situation in a recent press conference, stating that he believes he should be back in time to play in the tournament.

“She will be out, certainly until the World Cup, so she will not play in this block with Manchester United,” Ten Hag said. “I think [he can play at the World Cup] but we have to wait for the prognosis”.

Varane played a key role in Les Bleus’ victory in Russia four years ago before his £41m switch to United, and will surely be desperate to play a part in the defense of their crown this time around.

What has Dinnery said about Varane?

Dinnery has told GiveMeSport that he expects Varane to line up for Didier Deschamps’ game in Qatar, although he believes he may be “lacking a bit of sharpness”.

He said: “In terms of playing for United before this break, that’s not going to happen, but you certainly wouldn’t rule him out of the France squad.

“The decision will fall to Didier Deschamps and he will take a player who may not have played for three, four or five weeks of the competition and a player who, unfortunately, has suffered another injury.

“But in terms of his availability, unless there are major setbacks or setbacks, he’s a player I would expect to be fine going into this World Cup. If not, he’s just missing a bit of sharpness.”

How big of a loss will Varane be to Man Utd?

Varane has made 11 appearances for United in all competitions this season, establishing himself as one of the first names on the team sheet under Ten Hag.

According to WhoScored, the 6-foot-3 ace has won 1.6 aerial duels while making 3.8 clearances and 0.5 blocks per league game in 2022/23, placing him in the top four for each metric compared to his teammates.

Losing Varane could be a major blow to United and their hopes of a top-four finish, and France will surely be hoping their star centre-back makes a speedy recovery.
