Return from Injury
Manchester United’s Luke Shaw has resumed full training with England, providing a significant lift to the squad. The 28-year-old defender has been sidelined since February due to a hamstring injury sustained while playing for his club.
Southgate’s Gamble
England manager Gareth Southgate took a risk by including Shaw in his Euro 2024 squad, despite the player’s fitness concerns. Until now, Shaw has been unable to join the full training sessions with his teammates, who have had a mixed start to the tournament with a win against Serbia and a lackluster draw with Denmark.
Shaw to Miss Slovenia Clash
It was confirmed yesterday that Shaw will not take part in the upcoming crucial group match against Slovenia. However, his presence in training this morning suggests he could be in contention for a spot in the last-16 game, scheduled for the weekend.
Full Squad Training
Shaw’s return to training is a welcome development for Southgate, as it means all 26 players from the England squad are now actively participating in the preparations. Southgate had initially hoped to have Shaw available for the Denmark game and potentially starting against Slovenia, but plans have since changed.
Temporary Solution
In Shaw’s absence, Southgate has adapted by deploying right-footed Kieran Trippier in the left-back position. With Shaw’s potential return as a substitute for the knockout stage, England’s defensive options are set to be strengthened.
More updates to follow as England gears up for the critical stages of Euro 2024.
