From Africa to Germany: An Epic Journey
Russ Cook, the man who once crowned himself England’s ‘Hardest Geezer’, has completed an incredible feat of 377 marathons across Africa, covering 9,891 miles from Cape Town to Tunisia in 352 days. Now, he’s taken on a new challenge, running to every England game in Germany, starting from Wembley Stadium just two weeks ago.
Supporting the Three Lions on Foot
As England prepares to face Slovenia in their final group game, Cook paused his journey in Cologne to offer words of encouragement to captain Harry Kane and the rest of the team following their disappointing draw with Denmark. “Tournament football is tough,” Cook said, likening the experience to an ultra marathon and urging the team to stay focused and keep moving forward.
A Personal Transformation
Russ Cook’s life took a turn for the better at the age of 19 when he accepted a challenge to run the Brighton Half Marathon, leaving behind his unhealthy lifestyle. Through running, he discovered the values of discipline and self-belief, which he says have empowered him to apply the same principles to other areas of his life.
Conquering Africa and Charitable Success
After a series of endurance challenges, Cook embarked on the ultimate test of running the length of Africa, enduring injuries, extreme conditions, and even a kidnapping and robbery. His historic achievement not only earned him the nickname “Africa’s Forrest Gump” but also raised £1 million for charities supporting the homeless and refugees.
A Fan’s Unique Euro 2020 Experience
Rather than watching the Euros from the comfort of his home, Brighton supporter Russ was given the opportunity to attend the games by running to them, a journey sponsored by Sports Direct. His route took him from Wembley to Harwich, across the Netherlands, and through various German cities, all the way to Cologne.
England’s Prospects in the Tournament
Despite a rocky start and criticism from pundits like Gary Lineker, England sits at the top of their group, and Cook remains optimistic about their chances. He expresses satisfaction with the team’s performance so far and hopes to continue his running odyssey all the way to the final in Berlin on July 14.
