Time for Change: Greenwood’s Manchester United Exit Looms
Mason Greenwood, the 22-year-old forward, is pressing for clarity on his career path as he returns to England after a successful loan stint with Spanish club Getafe. Manchester United, his parent club, appears set to part ways with Greenwood ahead of the 2024-25 campaign, following an announcement last summer that his future would not be at Old Trafford.
Controversial Past and a Fresh Start
Greenwood’s career faced turmoil after his arrest in January 2022 on allegations of attempted rape and assault. Although charges were subsequently dropped, Manchester United conducted an internal review and decided that Greenwood should move on. His subsequent loan to Getafe proved fruitful, with Greenwood scoring 10 goals, making 36 appearances, and earning the accolade of Player of the Season.
Uncertain Homecoming and the Search for a New Club
Despite Greenwood’s achievements in Spain, and United’s new co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe not ruling out a return, the player is eyeing a permanent transfer, possibly away from England. The Mirror reports that Greenwood is eager to have his immediate future resolved by the end of the current week, with advanced negotiations underway with clubs including Marseille and Lazio, and interest from Juventus also on the horizon.
Pre-Season Exemption and Personal Training Sessions
As Manchester United gears up for pre-season training, Greenwood is expected to be granted additional time off to smooth the transition to his next club. In the interim, he has been spotted training in Manchester with Shola Shoretire, a former United teammate. Greenwood’s father, doubling as his agent, accompanied the pair, highlighting the family’s involvement in his professional trajectory.
