Arsenal ‘keen on signing Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid in January’

Arsenal are “interested in signing Matheus Cunha from Atletico Madrid in January” as they search for a replacement for the injured Gabriel Jesus, but “face competition from Leeds, Aston Villa and Wolves” in the race for the forward.

Arsenal are interested in signing Atletico Madrid striker Matheus Cunha as a temporary replacement for Gabriel Jesus in January, according to a report.

Gunners manager Mikel Arteta was dealt a blow during the World Cup when Jesus injured his knee, and the Brazilian has gone under the knife and faces a spell on the sidelines for up to three months.

Eddie Nketiah will replace Jesus in the Premier League return later this month but, according to GOAL, the club will look to strengthen in forward areas as they look to retain their title.

Arteta’s side are five points clear at the top of the table, ahead of Manchester City after an impressive start to the campaign ahead of the World Cup break.

Jesus has scored five goals for the club since joining for £45million in the summer from City, but has been vital in improving their overall play in attacking areas this year.

Nketiah has scored 26 goals for Arsenal and impressed towards the end of last season, so he can be a full-time substitute, but Arteta will be unwilling to take any chances as the chance to win the league it becomes more and more realistic.

It has been reported that Cunha will be leaving Atletico anyway, with Diego Simeone set to offload the 23-year-old just 15 months after joining the club.

Arsenal are said to be facing competition from Leeds, Aston Villa and Wolves for his services, although he was contracted to the Spanish side until 2026.

He has scored seven goals in 54 games for Atlético, although several of his minutes have been substitutes.
