Aston Villa news: Brown reacts to Barkley impact at Villa

Michael Brown has tipped John McGinn to flourish playing alongside Ross Barkley at Aston Villa.

The former Leeds and Tottenham midfielder, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes the Scotland international is set to reap the rewards of playing alongside the Chelsea loanee.

Barkley, 26, had a debut to remember for Villa as he scored via a deflection in the club’s shock 7-2 win over Liverpool.

McGinn, 25, also found his way onto the scoresheet against the reigning Premier League champions with his first goal of the season.

Brown, who played alongside Barkley during his loan spell at Leeds, believes the new Villa man can bring the best out of his midfield counterpart.

Asked what impact Barkley would have for Villa, Brown told Football Insider: “I think he’s much more experienced now, you look at McGinn, he’s getting all the rewards and the wide options as well, we’ve seen the attacking options for Aston Villa.

“I think he’s someone that can get through the middle and create things. I think that’ll give the likes of McGinn a great lift.

“His goal (v Liverpool), yes, it took a deflection but to get a goal and top off a performance like that is fantastic all round.”

McGinn has started all three of Villa’s Premier League games this season, with one goal and three assists under his belt.

Barkley meanwhile featured twice as a substitute for Chelsea before his temporary switch to Villa Park.
