Aston Villa news: Noel Whelan urges captain Jack Grealish to quit

Jack Grealish has been urged to quit Aston Villa by Noel Whelan if he is to have any hope of reaching his potential.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider deputy editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds man feels Grealish is now ready to make the step up to a top 4 club.

Villa are preparing to offer their talismanic captain a new bumper £100,000-a-week contract in an attempt to secure his services, according to the Sun.

The 24-year-old is said to be attracting interest from Manchester United.

Asked whether Grealish is likely to commit to a new deal Whelan told Football Insider: “The fact they’ve stayed in the Premier League means they hold a bit more weight for Grealish to stay but it depends what he wants for himself.

“Does he want another challenge where he can go to a big club, one of the top four where he’s going to be playing in the Champions League.

“Players like Jack Grealish, at that age, it’s where they need to be. That’s their platform, out in the Champions League and try and work his way back into that England squad.

“Sometimes you can be at a club too long. The problem for Villa is how are they going to replace Jack Grealish. Are they thinking Benrama is going to be that replacement?

“He’s a supporter of Aston Villa but I just think sometimes as a player you need to try and achieve what you can in a very short career.

“I don’t think it’s about money he stayed at the club last time there was interest, he’s done his job keeping Villa up I think now it’s time for him to think about himself and try and win some trophies before it’s too late.”
