Diaby’s Departure to Al Ittihad Nears Completion
As Aston Villa negotiate the transfer of Moussa Diaby to Saudi Arabian club Al Ittihad, it’s understood that the Midlands club has yet to settle the majority of the payment owed to Bayer Leverkusen from last year’s acquisition of the winger. The proposed deal with Al Ittihad is believed to be in the region of £50 million, reflecting Diaby’s impact since joining Villa Park.
Leverkusen Awaits Payment Amid Advanced Negotiations
Despite the potential influx of cash from the deal, Aston Villa will need to allocate a significant portion to repay Leverkusen, the club from which Diaby was signed. The 25-year-old Frenchman, who was instrumental in Villa’s successful season, including a fourth-place league finish and Champions League qualification, cost Villa an initial fee of £43 million.
Diaby’s Standout Season with Villa
Diaby’s tenure at Villa Park, though potentially short-lived, was marked by an impressive debut season. Featuring in 54 games and scoring ten goals across all competitions, he became a key figure in Unai Emery’s squad. His six Premier League goals helped him to rank as the club’s fifth-highest goalscorer.
Champions League Without Diaby?
Despite Villa securing a coveted Champions League spot for the first time since 1983, Diaby appears set to miss the European campaign with his likely move to the Middle East. The winger’s anticipated departure adds to the potential exit of forward talent, as Cole Palmer has reportedly urged teammate Ollie Watkins to consider a move to Chelsea.
