Bruce reacts as Leeds linked with shock move for Man Utd star

Alex Bruce has admitted he would be “very surprised” if Manchester United sold Sergio Romero to Leeds United.

The former Whites defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, suggested the Argentinian goalkeeper will want first-team football but can’t see Man Utd selling him to their rivals.

The 33-year-old is wanted by both Leeds and Everton according to ESPN after spending the season as David De Gea’s understudy.

Romero has an incredible record of 38 clean sheets in 59 games since arriving at Old Trafford in 2015, following spells with AZ Alkmaar, Sampdoria and Monaco.

Marcelo Bielsa is believed to be looking for players with Premier League experience as the Whites prepare for their first top-flight campaign in 16 years.

However, Bruce believes it would “raise a few eyebrows” if the stopper completed a move to Elland Road this summer.

He told Football Insider: “I’d be very, very surprised if Manchester United sell a player to Leeds United, the rivalry is there and it always will be there.

“I think it will certainly raise a few eyebrows if it did happen, but I’d be very surprised if that happened.

“Obviously, you can understand if Romero wants to go and get first-team football. He’s a top goalkeeper but I’d be very surprised if he signs for Leeds because of where he comes from.”

The Whites won the Championship title, an achievement which saw Bielsa crowned as the division’s manager of the year.

Upon receiving the award, Bielsa said: “The biggest thank you is to the players themselves because they are the ones doing the most difficult job in football that is playing, competing and this case clinching.”
