Celtic approach for Tottenham starlet rejected during window

Celtic made an approach for Tottenham winger Jack Clarke during the main window.

The Scottish giants tried to lure the 19-year-old on loan from the Premier League giants after previously losing out in the race to sign him in January.

A recruitment source has told Football Insider that Tottenham did not want Clarke being loaned out unless he was going to play regularly.

He had two spells on loan last season, firstly at boyhood club Leeds United and then QPR, and barely played in either of them.

This site revealed yesterday that Spurs put the block on a temporary move this season for the teenager, partly due to fears about his potential playing time and also because they want him to learn his trade at his parent club.

Jose Mourinho and his staff believe the youngster is better off playing for their Under-23s and working towards a first-team breakthrough.

Celtic’s attacking options were severely affected in their 2-0 SPL defeat to Rangers on Saturday as they were deprived of Covid-19 victims Odsonne Edouard and Ryan Christie.

Nevertheless, Neil Lennon was still able to name Tom Rogic Leigh Griffiths, £4.5million summer signing Albian Ajeti and £3m playmaker David Turnbull on the substitute’s bench.

Clarke has struggled for game time since shooting to prominence at Leeds two seasons ago.

That was enough to earn him a blockbuster transfer to Tottenham rising to a potential £13m.

The youngster has made two appearances for Tottenham Under-23s in Premier League 2 this season, scoring once.
