Frank McAvennie has claimed that Leigh Griffiths “will be ready” to make an impact for Celtic against Hamilton on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Parkhead favourite defended the 29-year-old after recent criticism from manager Neil Lennon.
Following Celtic’s 1-1 draw with OGC Nice last month, the Hoops boss slammed forward for being overweight and for his use of social media.
Since then, Chris Sutton has also spoken out against the hitman, telling BBC Radio 5 Live that he is “disgusted” by his behaviour.
But McAvennie has taken a much more lenient view of things.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “It was all about weight.

“You hear the stories about him being out playing football with his pals and so what? I know it is wrong and he could get injured but he is just a boy.
“If that is the worst that is going to happen to him, then fine.
“He will have trained, he will be here and he will be ready. If Edouard was to go Griff would be the main striker.”
Griffiths has endured a couple of difficult spells over the past two campaigns, initially missing a large portion of the 2018/19 for mental health reasons before being sidelined by a hamstring complaint for several games at the beginning of last season.
Despite those hurdles, Griffiths was still able to register 11 goals and four assists in all competitions before the season was curtailed because of the Coronavirus pandemic.
In other Celtic news, Alex Bruce has been left fretting after a “nightmare” injury update.
