Celtic news: McAvennie hails Elyounoussi and Elhamed

Frank McAvennie has heaped praise on Celtic duo Mohamed Elyounoussi and claimed he is “like a new signing” after his Tuesday wonder show.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Jason Jones, the former Parkhead striker claimed that the on-loan winger and teammate Hatem Abd Elhamed were “pretty awesome” in the 6-0 Champions League qualifying win.

Elyounoussi opened the scoring in the 6th minute before capping off the rout deep into stoppage time, while Elhamed provided the assist for Greg Taylor’s headed effort.

The goals were Elyounoussi’s first of the season, and McAvennie has suggested that he looks like a player transformed for Neil Lennon’s men.

Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “Elyounoussi was like a new signing.

“He’s back in the side and he was wonderful. His runs in behind were tremendous. Elyounoussi last night was superb.

“But I also like Elhamed at right-back. I like [Jeremie] Frimpong but I think he’s a better defender. He’s so good at getting down that wing and getting ball into the box, he was superb last night.

“Those two were pretty awesome.”

Elyounoussi returned to Parkhead on loan from Southampton again this summer having helped the Bhoys to their ninth consecutive league title in the 2019/20 campaign.

Likewise Elhamed initially joined Celtic last summer, arriving from Hapoel Beer Sheva in a deal worth around £1.6 million, but struggled for game time in his first season in Scotland and was limited to just five Scottish Premiership appearances over the course of his first 12 months.

In other news, a Premier League star reveals he wants to join Celtic and there is now only one hurdle to sealing the deal.
