Frank McAvennie has cast doubt over whether Patryk Klimala is ready to make a consistent impact for Celtic this season.
Speaking exclusively to Football Insider, the former Parkhead favourite praised the 21-year-old for “working really hard”, but suggested that he might still have some distance to go before he can establish himself as a regular fixture in the first team.
Klimala enjoyed a positive preseason campaign for the Hoops, scoring his first goal for the club in a 1-1 draw against OGC Nice last month.
But McAvennie believes that he is still a little way off the standard Neil Lennon will demand from him to secure a starting role.
Speaking to Football Insider, he said: “I do not know if Klimala could hack it for a full season, I do not know if he would score the goals and lead the line.
“It is not just about scoring goals. It is about leading the line and putting a shift in for the boys. He has bulked up in weight so I can see the boy is working really hard.

“I am not sure if he will score the goals that [Odsonne] Edouard and [Leigh] Griffiths will score. Maybe next year.
“Edouard and Griff are the finished article. We need the finished article. Next year you can go and try players because you would have the record and the history books.”
Klimala signed for the Bhoys from Polish side Jagiellonia Białystok in January for a fee of around £3.6 million.
Since then, he has made four competitive appearances for the Hoops, registering one assist in the Scottish FA Cup win over Clyde in February.
In other Celtic news, Alex Bruce has been left fretting after a “nightmare” injury update.
