Celtic news: McLeish – Ajer can be a bargain for PL sides

Celtic defender Kristoffer Ajer could prove to be a “bargain” signing for a Premier League side, according to Alex McLeish.

The former Rangers and Scotland manager, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists that the 22-year-old is one of a number of “great quality” players north of the border who will have caught the eye of English sides.

As quoted by the Daily Record, Ajer confirmed there had been “a lot of interest” in his signing over the summer transfer window.

McLeish believes that there will be plenty of English suitors for the Norway centre-back and that Premier League sides will not be put off by the asking price Celtic put on his head.

“The Scottish teams, I don’t think they should be trifled with just because it’s not the Premier League,” McLeish told Football Insider.

“These players are really of a great quality and we’ve seen what’s happened with some of them going down south and how big they’ve become for their teams down there.

“English teams will probably still get a bargain by their standards and the prices that they normally would pay but Ajer, I’m sure, will be on the radar of a number of clubs.”

Ajer, who joined Celtic back in 2016, has been a standout performer for the Bhoys and has helped them win three Premiership titles, three Scottish League Cups and two Scottish Cups.

He has the likes of Christopher Jullien, Shane Duffy and Hatem Abd Elhamed for competition at the heart of the defence this season.
