Noel Whelan claims that the prospective sale of Tom Rogic could boost Celtic in their hunt to sign Ivan Toney from Peterborough this summer.
The former Aberdeen forward, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, believes money raised from selling the 27-year-old could go towards an improved bid for the Posh hitman after their initial £3million offer was rejected.
As revealed by Football Insider, the Hoops are willing to cash in on Rogic and have received a £3.6million bid for the Australia international from an unnamed Qatari side.
Toney remains a Peterborough player despite huge interest in his capture after he netted 26 goals and contributed a further seven assists last season.
Having seen Celtic already try and fail to sign the 24-year-old once, Whelan believes Rogic’s sale could boost their coffers to make a new and significantly improved offer.
“Look, we’ve seen speculation about Toney again. We’ve seen Barry Fry saying he would like to keep him but unfortunately I don’t think a club like Peterborough, no disrespect, they’re a team that when they have a gem at the club, financially that keeps them going for a long, long time,” Whelan told Football Insider.
