Chelsea news: Bent warns Abraham over contract demands

Tammy Abraham is “going to struggle” to get the contract he is demanding after a poor second half of the season at Chelsea, according to Darren Bent.

The former Tottenham and England striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, insists the 22-year-old needs to focus on his football instead of trying to improve his terms at Stamford Bridge.

As revealed by Football Insider on Friday, Abraham’s future is up in the air amid his contract wrangle, with Frank Lampard unconvinced as to whether he can deliver on a consistent basis.

It is understood that the striker believes he has done enough to prove he should be earning more than teammate Callum Hudson-Odoi, who is on £120,000-a-week wages.

However, Bent believes that a poor second half of the current campaign means Abraham does not have much bargaining power and suggests he needs to lift his game before making such demands.

“With the contract negotiations, I know he’s been asking for the same sort of money as Hudson-Odoi,” Bent told Football Insider.

“If you look at Abraham’s numbers they read pretty good but the first half of the season he was superb and after that, the second half of the season with the injuries he wasn’t great.

“He’s going to struggle to get that contract money that he wants. I think he needs to forget about the contract talks, concentrate on having a good end to the season against Bayern, a good pre-season and then assess it from there.

“You can’t warrant and demand those kinds of wages if your performances out on the pitch haven’t been up to scratch. If he concentrates on his performances, the money will take care of itself.”

Abraham, a graduate of the youth system at Stamford Bridge, has played 49 times for the Blues’ senior side and scored 17 goals, all of which have come this season.

He made his England debut back in 2017 and has played four times for the Three Lions since.

In other Chelsea news, the Blues have made a “big breakthrough” in their bid to sign Ben Chilwell.
