Chelsea news: Mills blasts "ridiculous decision" and calls for radical change

Danny Mills has blasted Anthony Taylor for his “ridiculous decision” to send off Mateo Kovacic as Chelsea lost the FA Cup final 2-1 to Arsenal yesterday.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, called for a change to the law that would allow for video assistant referee to rule on second yellow cards.

Kovacic was sent off for a second bookable offence after 73 minutes but the replay showed it to be a very harsh decision from referee Anthony Taylor.

VAR is not allowed to intervene on second bookable offences and can only rule on straight red cards.

Mills urged the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to review the law.

“It was a ridiculous decision,” he told Football Insider.

“It is very, very poor from Anthony Taylor. He does not consult anybody or think about it.

“The first challenge is a yellow card and then Kovacic has to be very careful but if you look at it closely it is Xhaka that kicks Kovacic.

“We have seen this a few times this season, it happened with Bruno Fernandes against Aston Villa – it was clearly not a penalty. Referees are not quite understanding how the mechanics of football work at times.

“I do not understand why VAR cannot look at a second yellow card – it has to change. It is not right. It is a monumental decision so why can you not look at it on VAR? It is a red card. Surely VAR has to address that?

“VAR was brought in to eradicate big mistakes and a team going down to 10 men, wrongly, is a big mistake.”
