Chelsea news: Mills raves as Blues close in on 'Fantasic' signing

Danny Mills is adamant that Thiago Silva would be a “fantastic addition” to Chelsea this summer as the Brazilian nears a move to Stamford Bridge.

The former Leeds and Manchester City full-back, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted that “you cannot always buy for the future” and suggested that the 35-year-old was a player who the younger players could learn a lot from.

ESPN revealed earlier today that the centre-half is going to sign a two-year deal with the Blues after his contract at Paris Saint-Germain expired.

The Brazil international’s final game for PSG ended in defeat as Bayern Munich secured their sixth Champions League trophy with a 1-0 victory in Lisbon last night.

Mills cited the impact of Zlatan Ibrahimovic at Manchester United in the 2016/17 season as reason why Silva will be a success in London.

“People always say that you have to buy for the future but sometimes you need to buy for now,” he told Football Insider. “That is the most important thing.

“It is like when Zlatan came into Manchester United, that was for now. You cannot always buy players for the future and you cannot always just sign potential. You need players in there that are good now who the younger players can learn off. That is a huge part of it.

“I think he would be fantastic. A wealth of experience, a quality player and he clearly looks after himself. I think he would be a superb addition to Chelsea.”

Silva made 315 appearances for PSG and won the league title a staggering seven times while in the French capital.

The Brazil international has also been capped 88 times by his country and was part of the team that won the Copa America in 2019.
