CHELSEA have suffered a huge blow in the race to land Kai Havertz following reports Bayern Munich are in “pole position” to land the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker.
The Telegraph claim the Bundesliga champions want to keep the 21-year-old in Germany in a deal worth more than £75million.
Bayern are working on a move for Havertz and want him to join German compatriot Leroy Sane in a new-look attack next season.
Havertz has been heavily linked with a switch to Chelsea at the end of the season following another impressive campaign at Leverkusen.
But Bayern are reported to be determined to land the Germany international and are closer to their Bundesliga rival’s valuation.
It is thought that Havertz would compete with Leon Goretzka for a playmaker role, with the Bavarians opting against signing Philippe Coutinho on a permanent deal following his loan spell this term.
Meanwhile, Leverkusen’s sporting director Rudi Voller recently insisted the club have not given up hope of retaining their star asset – who still has two years left to run on his contract.
He told ARD: “We haven’t given up hope that he’ll stay with us.
“We try to give him every possibility that he can call up his qualities.
“He did an outstanding job in the second half of the season.”
