Chelsea told wantaway star needs one thing amid heavy links to direct Blues rival

An expert has told Chelsea what Christian Pulisic “needs” in his career, amid strong links with a move to another Premier League club.

Pulisic joined Chelsea as one of the hottest talents in European football. Indeed, his form during his time at Borussia Dortmund showed that he was a quality asset.

The season before his move, the American had contributed to eight goals in 20 Bundesliga games, almost one every two games.

That impact caused him to be caught Chelsea for a fee of more than 50 million pounds. There have been moments of magic as Pulisic has contributed 37 goals in 129 appearances for the Blues.

However, he has struggled to become one of the team’s leading men. His most appearances in a 38-game Premier League season were 27 in the 2020/21 campaign, and he started just 18 of those.

Pulisic has been on the pitch in the majority of games this season, with just three games to go in all competitions. However, of his 14 appearances, only four have been from the start.

His role has also recently changed under new manager Graham Potter. Although a winger by trade, the manager has tried Pulisic in a full-back role.

The American has fulfilled that duty twice: once against RB Salzburg and once against Brighton.

The expert hails Pulisic’s adaptability

Pulisic has not been the only Chelsea star to be tested in a position he is not used to. With Potter’s system using both full-backs and wide forwards, and the Blues having an abundance of wide men in their ranks, others have also been tested at the back.

Raheem Sterling is one of the Chelsea men who has also played as a full-back. American pundit Eric Wynalda has praised Pulisic for taking on the role better than his team-mate.

“Sterling played full-back once and that didn’t go well at all,” Wynalda said (via the Express ).

“There were a lot of looks on the bench. There was ‘I can’t defend’. “It should be up there where Mount touches.” ‘Put me up there, I don’t want to be here.’ His ego was really the reason this hasn’t happened again.

“Pulisic is saying ‘I’ll play, I understand. Let’s go’ and that’s why we saw him as a full-back.

“He got an assist [against Salzburg] off the play where he came in to collect the ball that could be him signaling to his coach that he needs more of the ball and doesn’t want to be chasing the ball. He wants to have the ball.”

While that could be the case, the advanced talent in the ranks at Stamford Bridge means that opportunities further up will be hard to come by.

Needs pulse transfer

Pulisic is still only 24, so he has plenty of time to find his feet and perform at a high level. Wynalda, however, believes he may have to stay away from Chelsea.

“The long-term future has to be a left-back in a team where he will get more time,” he said.

“I wouldn’t mind seeing Christian Pulisic in the black and white stripes of Newcastle.”

Much has been said about Pulisic’s switch from Chelsea to Newcastle. In fact, recent reports have claimed so has given the green light to the transfer himself, with the Magpies set to bring him on board from the summer.

A move to St James’ Park could be perfect for the full-back. He could become one of their star talents and make a real impact in the side, although he was surely playing consistently.

They are on the rise with Eddie Howe, and buying this project now could give any player the chance to play for a powerhouse in English football in a few years’ time.
