Chris Wilder insists Sheffield United are looking out for themselves when quizzed on Jurgen Klopp’s scathing comments about him.
The Blades boss and his Liverpool counterpart have been at loggerheads in recent days.
Wilder accused Klopp of selfishness in his pursuit of five substitutes and again made a dig at him for his comments on fans returning to stadiums.
He called the German a ‘world-class’ politician when speaking about the fact Liverpool will be allowed fans back from December 2 while Sheffield United will not.
In an extraordinary interview after Liverpoool’s dramatic 1-1 draw with Brighton on Saturday, Klopp congratulated BT Sport for James Milner’s injury – insisting it was the broadcaster’s fault for his side kicking off at lunchtime just three days after playing in the Champions League.
And he took aim at Wilder, returning the Sheffield United manager’s ‘selfish’ jibe.
During that interview, Klopp said: “Chris Wilder or whoever, constantly say I’m selfish. I think all the things show that he’s selfish but that’s not too important.
“I was in a similar situation as he is when I worked at Mainz – all about staying in the league, but they have three subs and one point if I am right.
“If you can’t do five subs in a game like this, it’s not for tactical reasons.
“It’s not for tactics, it’s to save the players. It’s for all players. You will it from now on untll December. We will see.”
Klopp has been bemoaning the hectic schedule for weeks amid an injury crisis at the club that has seen several first team players out of action.
Wilder was asked about Klopp’s rant after Sheffield United were beaten 1-0 by West Brom on Saturday night, which left them rooted to the foot of the table.
And he insisted he is only looking out for his club by insisting that sticking with three subs is only of benefit to the big guns in the Premier League.
When asked if the Blades were looking out for their own interests, he replied: “I think everybody has the right to do that.
“There’s 20 votes in this league any everybody looks after themselves right the way through. Nobody is looking after Sheffield United right the way now.
“We have to look after ourselves and like I said I’m not going into the nuts and bolts of what’s been said.
“I’ve got a huge amount of respect for Liverpool Football Club and have a huge amount of respect for Jurgen.
“Whether it’s looking after the football club, whether it’s selfish or another word.
“By the way, there’s a few more managers in there as well that have looked after their own club. I’ll always look after Sheffield United.”
