Gareth Bale was accused of not doing enough to help Wales defensively as his side were thrashed 4-0 by Denmark in their Euro 2020 last-16 clash.
Wales failed to replicate their success of Euro 2016, where they reached the semi-final, and were knocked out at the first round of the knockout stages.
It was an underwhelming performance and talkSPORT host, and former Republic of Ireland striker, Tony Cascarino believes the 31-year-old needs to work harder without the ball for his country.
Cascarino also said that Cristiano Ronaldo does more than the Real Madrid forward to help Portugal out at the back.
“I don’t think there’s any Welsh player that is going to shout and holler at Gareth Bale during the game,” Cascarino told Weekend Sports Breakfast.
“The manager has made it quite clear he is going to leave him on and you get why. He’s a threat when he’s got the ball.
“When he hasn’t got the ball… I ask you one question – who works harder without the ball Gareth Bale or Cristiano Ronaldo?
“You mentioned the goal against Germany where he headers it away from a corner and he sprints 90 yards to get on the end of something.
“I would argue Cristiano Ronaldo works far harder than Gareth does.
“No one is going to point the finger at Gareth because he’s on a pedestal, and rightly so because he’s achieved a hell of a lot in his career.
“But he had to help out Connor Roberts yesterday, but he didn’t because he was so concerned about when he received the ball, getting it on his left foot and pinging it 30 yards on the diagonal.”
That theory will be put to the test tonight as Ronaldo lines-up for Portugal against Belgium in their last-16 clash, which is live on talkSPORT at 8pm.
