A Rocky Road at Old Trafford
Donny van de Beek’s tenure at Manchester United has been anything but smooth. After joining from Ajax for a hefty £39 million in September 2020, the Dutch midfielder faced a series of challenges that ultimately led to his departure from Old Trafford this summer.
From Ajax Star to United Benchwarmer
Van de Beek thrived under Erik ten Hag at Ajax, earning acclaim for his performances in both the Eredivisie and Champions League. However, his transition to Manchester United saw him struggle for playing time, first under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and later Ralf Rangnick. Despite returning to the club in 2022 after a loan spell at Everton, his situation hardly improved, culminating in a knee injury that sidelined him for months.
Moving On: A New Chapter in Girona
Now at Girona, Van de Beek is finding his feet again. After a loan to Eintracht Frankfurt, he made a permanent move to the Catalan side for an initial fee of £417,000, which could rise to £7.5 million. He recently played a full match against Athletic Bilbao and even scored his first goal in over two years during Girona’s Champions League debut.
Reflecting on the Past
When asked about his experiences under Ten Hag at Ajax compared to his time at Manchester United, Van de Beek was evasive, suggesting it was a complex topic. He did, however, express empathy for his former teammates, acknowledging the difficulties they face despite their talent.

A Warm Welcome in Girona
At Girona, Van de Beek feels a sense of community that was lacking in his previous clubs. He appreciates the close-knit atmosphere and the support from his teammates, which he believes is vital at this stage of his career. He highlighted the importance of both the footballing aspect and the camaraderie in helping him regain his confidence.
Looking Ahead
With familiar faces like former United teammate Daley Blind and ex-Tottenham players in the squad, Van de Beek is poised to make his mark in La Liga. He is set to return to action against Real Sociedad and looks forward to continuing his journey in Europe as Girona prepares to host Slovan Bratislava in the Champions League.
