According to The Mirror, Dutch boss van Gaal left his phone unattended in a hotel toilet in Doha recently.

It was discovered by Dutch football writer Valentijn Driessen who pressed the lock button and quickly saw a picture of van Gaal and his wife Truus as the background image.

The De Telegraaf writer also noted two missed calls from a caller ID named: “Manchester United”.

The phone was quickly returned to the former United boss, who was understandably upset that it had fallen into Driessen’s hands.

There has been further suggestion that the Red Devils will make a move for Gakpo in the January window following his brilliant displays for the Netherlands in Qatar.

Gakpo came close to joining Leeds in the summer, but United now appear to be the favorites and the player himself recently admitted he could be persuaded to move to Old Trafford.

Asked about PSV’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and then missing out on a move to the Premier League in the summer, Dutch newspaper Gakpo NRC: “It was a difficult period.

‘I learned from that. I will do it another way. What comes, that comes. Let’s say you want to move from RKC (Waalwijk) to PSV, but this club does not come. Then you can panic.

“I thought about Manchester United, but when that didn’t happen, I couldn’t remember. And I started to doubt. Leeds United came. Should I go?

‘Now I expect everything. I haven’t heard from Manchester United yet. When they come, I’ll think about it. I also seek God’s help in these decisions.’

The winger has scored 13 goals and 17 assists in all competitions for PSV in the Eredivisie.

The Dutch star will be hoping to continue his impressive scoring form and help fire the Netherlands into their first World Cup final since 2010.

Gakpo scored in all three of the Netherlands’ group games against Senegal, Ecuador and Qatar and played almost the entire game in their 3-1 win against the USA.

The 23-year-old will be hoping to score again when his side take on Argentina in the quarter-finals on Friday evening.
