Ex-Leicester star Islam Slimani axed by Lyon and has contract terminated before joining Sporting Lisbon on free transfer

FORMER Leicester City striker Islam Slimani has joined Sporting Lisbon after seeing his contract with Lyon terminated.

Slimani signed for Lyon from Leicester 12 months ago on a free transfer, but has had his contract with the French club ripped up six months early.

Slimani spent five years with Leicester, but has now joined Sporting Lisbon after having his contract with Lyon terminated

The 33-year-old centre-forward has now joined Sporting, whom he initially left to join Leicester.

Slimani spent a successful three years in the Portuguese capital between 2013 and 2016, bagging 57 goals in 111 games.

That form earned him a move to the Premier League, the summer after Leicester’s historic title win, and a five-year spell with the Foxes.

But Slimani played just 47 times for Leicester overall, scoring a meagre 13 goals.

He was shipped off on loan three times in five years at the King Power, first to Newcastle, then out to Fenerbahce and Monaco.

None of those moves worked out as planned, and Slimani finally departed permanently deal last year.

His time at Newcastle in particular was one to forget, with a mere four games and no goals in six months at St James’ Park.

But his 18-month contract with Lyon has been cut short after just eight goals 37 games for the Ligue 1 outfit.

An official Lyon statement confirmed: “Olympique Lyonnais informs that it has reached an agreement with Islam Slimani for the termination of his contract.

“Having arrived free from Leicester in January 2021, Islam Slimani had signed an 18-month contract with OL until June 30, 2022.

“The Algerian international striker played 37 matches (8 goals) in the Lyon jersey and will join Sporting Portugal, a club for which he has already played from 2013 to 2016.

“Olympique Lyonnais thanks Islam and wishes him the greatest success for the rest of his career.”

Slimani saves his best form for the international stage, with the striker particularly prolific for his country Algeria.

He has netted an impressive 40 goals in 84 games for his nation, but couldn’t help avoid a group stage exit at the Africa Cup of Nations this year.
