Ajax midfielder Edson Alvarez is one of the players Chelsea are “regarding”, according to Fabrizio Romano in today’s edition of the Daily Briefing, exclusively on CaughtOffside’s Substack.
The Mexico international has shone in his time in the Eredivisie and was wanted by Chelsea last summer, although his club were keen not to sell.
It’s been a difficult few months for Ajax as they lost manager Erik ten Hag to Manchester United, with the Dutch tactician attacking his former club for the signings of Lisandro Martinez and Antony.
Alvarez looks like the next big name to leave Ajax for the Premier League, according to Romano, as he expects a race for his signature in 2023.
The transfer news pundit did not explicitly say whether or not Chelsea would try again for the 25-year-old, but it seems likely to be one of the options they are considering as he still admires the player.
Ajax’s Edson Alvarez has been linked to Chelsea
“Edson Alvarez is also one of the players that Chelsea appreciates, but there are no talks now,” Romano said.
“He’s been quiet since August but I’m sure a lot of clubs will be watching him in the Premier League in 2023. Chelsea tried to sign him in the summer but Ajax made it clear they didn’t want to sell and could move on being a difficult deal.”
Romano added that CFC could repeat their Christopher Nkunku trick with other transfer targets.

“Overall, Chelsea can surprise as they have Todd Boehly making transfer decisions, but now also a new board with Joe Shields, Laurence Stewart, Paul Winstanley and soon Christopher Vivell planning new signings,” he said.
“So everything is open, they will be very active in future plans. I wouldn’t be surprised if they try something again like they did with Nkunku’s first move.
