Late Night for Young Lions Fans

Schools across the country are adjusting their Monday morning schedules to accommodate young football enthusiasts following England’s late-night Euro 2024 final against Spain. With the match kicking off at 8 pm on Sunday, the final whistle will sound well past the bedtime of many young supporters.

Head Teachers Show Support for National Team

Understanding the significance of the occasion, head teachers like Gary Spracklen of the Prince of Wales school in Dorchester have decided to delay the start of school. Pupils will be allowed to arrive at 11 am instead of the usual 8.45 am to ensure they are well-rested after cheering on their team. Spracklen emphasized the school’s desire to unite with the nation in support of the England team.

Creative Support and Inclusive Celebrations

The Prince of Wales school has been actively involved in supporting England throughout the tournament, producing supportive films and even a ‘Vindaloo’ video featuring children and parents. Despite the enthusiasm, Spracklen acknowledged the challenge some parents face in obtaining similar leniency from their employers.

Community Spirit and Positive Reactions

Wooburn Green Primary School in Buckinghamshire, led by Sam Kaye, is also implementing a ‘soft start’ for their pupils, allowing them to arrive up until 10.30 am. The decision has been met with widespread approval from both children and parents, with the school engaging in activities like sweepstakes to celebrate the Euros.

Not All Schools Can Join In

However, not every school has been able to offer a later start. At Digby the Tedder County Primary School in Lincolnshire, head teacher Alison Crawshaw praised her students for their persuasive letters requesting a delayed opening but explained the need for consistency and fairness across all sporting events.

National Holiday Hopes and Historic Rivalry

As England fans anticipate the possibility of ending their trophy drought, calls for a national bank holiday in the event of a victory have surged, though no official plans have been announced by the Government. The historic rivalry between England and Spain adds to the excitement, with England having a slight edge in their overall 27 encounters.
