A Regretful Departure

Stephane Henchoz, who spent six years at Liverpool, has labelled the club’s remarkable Champions League victory in Istanbul as his “worst memory.” The former defender left Anfield just months before the iconic match, missing out on a moment that would define the club’s history.

From Anfield to Celtic

Joining Liverpool in 1999 from Blackburn Rovers, Henchoz made 135 Premier League appearances before falling out of favour under manager Rafa Benitez in 2004. With his contract nearing its end, he sought more playing time and made the move to Celtic midway through that season.

Witnessing the Miracle from Afar

As Liverpool faced AC Milan in the 2005 Champions League final, Henchoz found himself alone in a Glasgow hotel room, watching the match unfold on television. Despite Liverpool’s dismal first half, trailing 3-0, he never anticipated the incredible comeback that would follow.

Bittersweet Emotions

Reflecting on the match, Henchoz expressed mixed feelings. “I was pleased for the club and my teammates, but at that moment, I couldn’t help but question my decision to leave,” he admitted. He recalled thinking about how he could have been part of the squad celebrating that unforgettable night.

A Career Full of Choices

Despite the disappointment, Henchoz did secure a trophy that season, winning the Scottish Cup with Celtic. However, his time in Scotland was short-lived, and he returned to England after his contract ended, eventually signing with Wigan Athletic before retiring in 2008.

Lessons Learned

Henchoz’s story serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of football and the choices players make. “It’s one of the biggest regrets in my career,” he reflected, acknowledging that sometimes, decisions lead to unexpected outcomes.
