A Former Wonderkid’s Transformation

Tyias Browning, once hailed as a wonderkid in the English football scene, has taken a remarkable path since his days at Everton. Now 30, Browning has made headlines once again, but this time as Jiang Guangtai, a name he adopted after his move to China.

Early Career in England

Before his overseas adventure, Browning was a promising talent at Everton, making nine appearances for the club between 2014 and 2016. He also gained valuable experience through loan spells at Wigan, Preston, and Sunderland, showcasing his versatility as a defender.

International Recognition

His impressive performances earned him 14 caps for England’s youth teams, including the U17s, U19s, and U21s. However, in 2019, Browning made a bold decision that would change the course of his career.

A Leap to the Chinese Super League

In a surprising move, Browning signed with Chinese giants Guangzhou Evergrande for approximately £4 million. The club was a dominant force in the league, having won seven of the previous eight titles. His debut season was a success, helping the team reclaim the league trophy.

Embracing a New Identity

During his time in China, Browning made 61 appearances for Guangzhou and embraced his new identity, changing his name to Jiang Guangtai. His commitment to his new home culminated in earning his first senior cap for China in 2021, thanks to eligibility through his maternal grandfather.

Success with Shanghai Port

After a successful stint at Guangzhou, Browning joined rivals Shanghai Port in 2022. He has already made 43 appearances in two years, contributing to the team’s success in winning back-to-back Chinese Super League titles, with the latest victory occurring just this past weekend.

Looking Ahead

With his sights set on further glory, Browning aims to secure a third consecutive title when the new season begins in 2025. His journey from a young talent in England to a celebrated player in China is a testament to his resilience and adaptability on the football pitch.
