Ex-Premier League Star Trades Boots for Scissors
In a surprising twist, former Premier League striker Danny Hoesen has swapped his football boots for hairdressing scissors, embarking on a fresh career path as a barber. The Dutch footballer, known for his time at Fulham and Ajax, has taken on a new role at Maesons, a barbershop in Utrecht. At just 33 years old, Hoesen is proving that life after football can be just as exciting.
A Brief Footballing Journey
Hoesen’s football career began in the Netherlands, where he joined Fulham in 2008 from Fortuna Sittard. He made his mark by being named a substitute in a Premier League match against Sunderland in 2011. His journey saw him loaned to Fortuna Sittard and Finnish club HJK before finding success in the Eredivisie. In 2013, he celebrated winning the league title with Ajax, followed by an FA Cup victory with Groningen in 2015.
After his time in Europe, Hoesen ventured across the Atlantic to play for US clubs San Jose Earthquakes and Austin FC. He eventually returned to the Netherlands, where he concluded his playing career with Emmen last year.
Embracing a New Identity
Transitioning from the world of professional sports to hairdressing is no small feat, but Hoesen is embracing the change with open arms. In an interview with Voetbal International, he expressed that he never felt too proud to take on a different role. “It’s not every day that a former professional footballer goes to work in a hairdresser’s,” he said, reflecting on his new life.

Hoesen’s humility shines through as he dismisses any notion of superiority that comes from being a professional athlete. “Why should I feel superior just because by chance I can kick a ball well?” he questioned, revealing a grounded perspective on his past life in football.
Life Beyond the Limelight
During his playing days, Hoesen felt enveloped in a bubble, surrounded by the trappings of fame. He recalls how many players would buy designer clothes to flaunt their wealth. However, his new career has opened up a world of diverse conversations. “These days I’ll maybe chat with an airline pilot, then a lawyer, and then someone who’s travelled the world. Not bad, eh?” he remarked, highlighting the enriching experiences that come from engaging with a variety of people.
Reflections on Fame
While many customers at the barbershop are keen to ask about his football career, including memorable moments like his goal for Ajax against Barcelona in the Champions League, Hoesen admits that it can be a bit uncomfortable. “That makes me a bit uncomfortable – everyone made such a big deal of it,” he confessed. However, he relishes the moments when he meets customers who don’t recognize him, appreciating the normalcy of those interactions.
A Haircut for Ten Hag?
In a light-hearted comment, Hoesen also referenced Erik ten Hag, the recently sacked Manchester United manager, suggesting that his barbershop could help give the coach a “smart beard.” This playful remark illustrates Hoesen’s ability to maintain a sense of humour and camaraderie with fellow football personalities, even as he forges a new path.

The Future Looks Bright
As Danny Hoesen embarks on this new chapter in his life, he serves as an inspiring example of how athletes can transition to different careers while remaining true to themselves. Whether he’s cutting hair or reminiscing about his football days, Hoesen is ready to embrace the future, one haircut at a time. With an open mind and a willingness to connect with others, his journey is sure to be as fulfilling as his time on the pitch.
