Gareth Bale and Dele Alli set to start for Tottenham alongside Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son as Tottenham look to get top four bid back on track against Burnley

It’s five defeats in six Premier League games for Jose Mourinho and his Tottenham side and their top four hopes are in tatters right now.

Their season is fraying at the seams and a comfortable Europa League round of 32 win over Wolfsberger can’t mask it’s threatening to implode domestically in N17.

Mourinho is under pressure to deliver trophies for Tottenham

The European adventures have given the club, and it’s suffering supporters, some hope and belief though.

Fringe stars Dele Alli and Gareth Bale, who appeared to have been sidelined totally by Mourinho, have sprung to life.

The former thrilled on Wednesday night with a stunning overhead kick goal and two assists, while his Welsh teammate now has two goals and two assists in three games.

Have they arrived in time to save a Spurs season in danger of slipping from title tilt to mid-table mediocrity?

Mourinho has insisted he’s used to the stress and strain he’s currently under and is thriving on it.

“The problem is if you don’t have pressure,” he said. “I felt in trouble when I was at home and did not have pressure for a few months.

“That’s the problem. It comes like oxygen, it is our life, I don’t think there is any coach in the world without objectives or any kind of pressure.

“You just get used to it and also used to the way the press is at the time, you just have to adapt to it.”

But Mourinho knows he cannot afford many more slip-ups, with Julian Nagelsmann already being linked with replacing him in the summer.

Tottenham now face a must-win run of fixtures against lowly opponents – starting with the visit of Burnley on Sunday.

Giovani Lo Celso has returned to training but is still absent, while Serge Aurier is edging closer to a return to the starting XI.

Mourinho has no new injury worries but performances from some of his squad players will have given him a selection headache.

Bale and Alli should come in for Lucas Moura and Erik Lamela given their recent exploits.

Bale’s Spurs homecoming looked like falling flat after a tough first few months back in north London where he was dogged by fitness issues on the back of barely playing for Real Madrid in recent seasons.

But he is starting to show there is still life in his legs with a string of positive performances and Mourinho says he seems ‘happier than ever’ right now.

Alli, meanwhile, must surely be given his chance after his impressive midweek display.

Meanwhile, Japhet Tanganga could start again at right-back ahead of Matt Doherty, if Aurier isn’t deemed fit enough.

Toby Alderweireld and Eric Dier could get the nod in defence against a tough Burnley frontline, while Sergio Reguilon and Hugo Lloris will also come back in, along with Harry Kane and Heung-Min Son.
