New Chapter in Italy
David De Gea, the seasoned goalkeeper, has found a new home at Fiorentina following a lengthy break from professional football. The 33-year-old Spaniard, previously a linchpin at Manchester United, has inked a one-year deal with the Italian club, with the potential to extend for an additional year.
End of an Era at Old Trafford
De Gea’s departure from Manchester United came after an impasse over contract negotiations last summer, leading to a 14-month hiatus from the game. His last outing for the Red Devils was a defeat to Manchester City in the 2023 FA Cup final, marking over 400 days since his last competitive performance.
Fiorentina’s Goalkeeping Legacy
Fiorentina has welcomed De Gea into the fold as they prepare to bid farewell to their current first-choice goalkeeper, Pietro Terracciano, whose contract concludes in 2025. Terracciano has been a stalwart for the team, boasting 53 appearances and 13 clean sheets across various competitions last season.
De Gea’s Storied Career at United
Joining United from Atletico Madrid in 2011, De Gea’s 12-year tenure saw him make 545 appearances and surpass Peter Schmeichal’s record for the most clean sheets at the club. His illustrious time in Manchester was crowned with five major trophies, including the Premier League title in 2013, the FA Cup in 2016, and the Europa League in 2017. The goalkeeper also clinched the Premier League Golden Glove twice and was named Manchester United’s Player of the Year for three consecutive seasons.
International Recognition and Future Prospects
On the international stage, De Gea has been capped 45 times for Spain, with his last appearance in 2020. As he joins Fiorentina, a team that finished eighth in Serie A last season and were runners-up in the Europa Conference League, De Gea will be looking to bring his experience and accolades to bear in the upcoming campaign, which kicks off against Parma on August 17.
