Disheartening Response During Solemn Appeal
In a moment marred by insensitivity, a group of Leeds fans faced criticism after booing during a heartfelt appeal against knife and gun crime at Loftus Road. Dr Mark Prince OBE, father of slain youth player Kiyan Prince, was addressing the crowd on the poignant occasion, only to be met with jeers from some away supporters.
A Father’s Plea Met with Boos
While Dr Prince spoke passionately about the loss of his son Kiyan, who died trying to break up a fight in 2006, and the work of The Kiyan Prince Foundation, his message was overshadowed by the disrespectful reaction from a section of the crowd. The shock was palpable as Prince addressed the hecklers directly, questioning their empathy and family values.
Leeds Supporters’ Regretful Acknowledgment
The Leeds United Supporters’ Trust swiftly expressed regret over the incident, attributing the unfortunate response to poor sound quality and lack of visibility, which left many unaware of the speech’s content and significance. They emphasized that had the fans grasped the gravity of Dr Prince’s appeal, such a reaction would never have occurred.
Clubs and Fans United in Apology
Leeds United communicated their intent to issue apologies both to Queens Park Rangers and Dr Prince, acknowledging the oversight in not informing fans about the half-time address. Recognizing the shared tragedy of knife crime, as Leeds fans themselves suffered losses in 2000, the supporters’ groups extended their sincere apologies for the incident and commended the efforts of The Kiyan Prince Foundation.
