Leeds United close in on Gelhardt as personal terms agreed

Leeds United are close to wrapping up two new striker signings after agreeing personal terms with Wigan Athletic star Joe Gelhardt, Football Insider has learned.

The newly-promoted Premier League outfit are set to unveil Linfield attacker Charlie Allen for a fee of around £300,000.

That deal was settled back in May but has yet to be announced, and the Whites are looking to follow up with the capture of another youngster tipped for the very top in 18-year-old Gelhardt.

A Leeds source has told Football Insider there is a growing expectation the deal can be finalised this week.

Wigan’s administrators have accepted their offer of £1million plus performance-related add-ons.

Additionally, Gelhardt has also agreed personal terms with Leeds and there are only a few paperwork details to be finalised before the deal is done.

United have looked to take advantage of Wigan’s cash crisis that took them into administration last month.

The wonderkid had previously been valued at around the £5million mark by Wigan after graduating from their youth ranks to make a strong first-team impression.

Gelhardt has 21 first-team appearances in total for the Latics, 19 of which have come this season.

Capped by England at Under-18 level, he has also attracted strong interest from the likes of Celtic, Everton and Rangers.

The rising star is poised to become Leeds’ third signing of this summer after Illan Meslier and Helder Costa.

In other news, Leeds United are working on a deal to sign a brilliant Belgium centre-forward in cut-price deal.
