Leeds United news: Danny Mills claims announcement is "huge shame"

Danny Mills has claimed that “it is a huge shame” that Leeds United will most likely play Liverpool behind closed doors on the opening day of the season.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the players would have been desperate to play at a packed Anfield and have their families with them for the occasion.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side travel to Merseyside on 12 September to face last season’s Premier League champions after the fixtures for the 2020/21 season were announced on Thursday.

However, the match will almost certainly be played without fans, as was seen in the latter stages of the last campaign, with Covid-19 still a major health concern in the UK.

Leeds have not played at Anfield since 2016 and have not played there in the league since October 2003.

When asked by Football Insider how disappointing the prospect of playing at Anfield without fans would be for players and fans of Leeds, Mills said:

“A lot of these players have never played at Anfield. They will want to go to Anfield, Old Trafford, Stamford Bridge, the new Spurs stadium.

“They will want to go to these places and play in front of a full crowd and take their families with them. It is what you dream of as a kid, making your family and your club proud.

“It is a huge shame that when Leeds travel to Anfield it will almost certainly be behind closed doors.”

The newly-promoted Leeds face a Liverpool side that has not lost at Anfield in the league for just over three years – Crystal Palace the last team to beat them there in April 2017.

United also face Fulham, Sheffield United, Manchester City and Wolves in their opening five games.
