Leeds United news: Mills makes shock claim after major announcement

Danny Mills has suggested that Leeds United could pull off an upset on the 12th of September after it was revealed that they will face Liverpool on the opening day of next season.

The former Whites and Manchester City defender, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that it is probably the best time to play a potentially “rusty” Jurgen Klopp side.

Marcelo Bielsa’s side will travel to last season’s champions for their first Premier League game since 2004 after the fixtures for the 2020/21 season were announced on Thursday.

The newly-promoted Leeds face a Liverpool side that has not lost at Anfield in the league for just over three years – Crystal Palace the last team to beat them there in April 2017.

Mills claimed that a point on the opening day of the season would give Leeds a lot of confidence going into the rest of the campaign.

“These are the games that you want,” he told Football Insider. “As a player you want to challenge yourself against the best.

“Leeds will still be riding the crest of a wave for the first game of the season. They will go in there with no expectations. They could get beat 3-0 and it would not be the end of the world. If they manage to nick a draw it would give them such confidence.

“Preseason will be different and Liverpool might be rusty. It is probably better to play Liverpool on the opening day of the season, rather than December time when they are right at it.”

The two English giants have not met since 2016 when goals from Divock Origi and Ben Woodburn helped Liverpool to a 2-0 win over the Whites.

Leeds first game back at Elland Road will come against fellow promoted side Fulham a week later.
