Leeds United news: Phillips drops Bielsa contract claim after big update

Kevin Phillips is “99.9 per cent sure” that Marcelo Bielsa will sign a new contract at Elland Road after the Leeds United squad returned to training today.

The former England international, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, insisted that he would “be amazed” if the 65-year-old walked away from the club after their promotion last month.

The Argentine manager was out of contract at the end of the 2019/20 campaign in which he guided Leeds back to the Premier League for the first time in 16 years.

Football Insider revealed last month that the club were set to offer Bielsa a lucrative deal in excess of £100,000-a-week.

Fans still eagerly await an official announcement but can take comfort from the fact that the squad returned to training at Thorp Arch today to begin pre-season with Marcelo Bielsa present.

When asked by Football Insider if the news was a telltale sign that an announcement was imminent, Phillips said: “I am 99.9 per cent sure he will sign.

“He is very much his own man, as we have seen this season and he will do it his way. I do not think he is too interested in what other people think.

“After what he has been through over the past two seasons, to take that football club up, I would be amazed if he walked away.

“To have players back in training tells me straight away that he is looking forward to the season and that he will put pen to paper shortly.”

Leeds United chiefs

When speaking on Bielsa last month, chief executive Angus Kinnear said: “The challenge with Marcelo is, intentions are always a bit of a mystery because he’s only focused on the next game.

“You’re a brave man to try and distract him from the task of the next match. He’s fallen in love with the club, he’s committed to it.”

In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED that club are set to seal fifth summer signing.
