Kevin Phillips has urged Leeds United to send Joe Gelhardt out on loan next season if he is not going to be given regular first team action at Elland Road.
The former Sunderland and West Brom striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, claimed that limited involvement with the match day squad could have a detrimental effect to the 18-year-old’s confidence.
Football Insider revealed on Friday that an announcement was imminent after a bid was accepted and personal terms agreed with the teenager.
He is set to sign for an initial £1million plus add-ons, and the deal could be completed today.
Phillips believes a six-month loan move would be the best option for Gelhardt next season.
“When you have come from playing regular football, to sit on the bench and to some days not make match day squad can be really frustrating and can have a major knock-on effect with a player’s confidence,” he told Football Insider.

“If he is not going to be involved week in, week out I would like to see him go out on loan. Get that experience and learn the game. Then when he comes back to Leeds he will be a better player.
“I would fully expect the young lad to be loaned out. Whether that be for six months or a year. Until the New Year might be a better option.”
Gelhardt, who has been capped by England at Under-18 level, made 19 appearances for the Latics last season.
Wigan’s administrators accepted an offer of £1million plus performance-related add-ons for United for the youngster.
In other Leeds United news, it can be REVEALED the Whites want to blow West Brom away for their sixth potential signing of this transfer window.
