Leeds United news: Whelan claims £14m is 'fair' for Kent

Noel Whelan has claimed “£14million is a fair price” for Leeds United to pay Rangers to seal the signing of Ryan Kent.

The former United and Aberdeen striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, heaped praise on the 23-year-old attacker and is unsurprised by Marcelo Bielsa’s strong interest.

Kent, who has scored three goals in five appearances this season, has three years left on his contract at Ibrox after he penned a four-year deal upon his arrival from Anfield last summer.

Football Insider revealed yesterday that Leeds are preparing to make a second offer for the winger after their initial bid of £8.5million plus add-ons was rejected.

The Gers signed the Englishman from Liverpool for a fee in the region of £6.5million 12 months ago after a successful loan spell at the club.

When asked by Football Insider if he wanted to see the Whites return to the Scottish club with an improved offer, Whelan said: “Kent is a fantastic player.

“I rated him very highly when he was at Barnsley. I remember watching him when Leeds played against Barnsley and he scored that day at Oakwell. A lovely turn and finish.

“He has loads of talent and it is not the first time that he has been linked with Leeds. I remember Marcelo Bielsa going to watch him at Bradford when Liverpool were playing there so he has been admired for a long time.

“Unfortunately, we will have to pay at least double what we would have got him for because he has been so consistent in Scotland. He is an integral player at Rangers. You can see that he has has developed and become a better player under Steven Gerrard. £14million is a fair price.”
