Leeds United news: Whelan drools over potential Delph reunion

Noel Whelan insists Fabian Delph could prove a bargain for Leeds United if he can get over his injury problems shown at Everton.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the former Leeds striker and boyhood fan at Elland Road has been left drooling over a potential reunion but admits the midfielder’s fitness problems are a concern.

The Daily Star report that Leeds are desperate to recruit experienced Premier League players this summer and believe they could re-sign the 30-year-old for £5million.

Delph came through the youth ranks at Elland Road and played 58 times for the club before he joined Aston Villa.

Whelan insists that the England international could be a valuable member of the Leeds squad next season but only if he can stay fully fit for the whole year.

Whelan told Football Insider: “He’s a great football player is Fabian, he can command and run the show when he’s at it and at the peak of his performances.

“I do worry a little bit that he’s been a little bit injury-plagued this season. If he can manage to get that right and we can have a fit Fabian Delph out there, his experience and quality will no doubt strengthen Leeds United.

“You’ve got to be questioning is he picking up these injuries for a reason now? That’s my only worry but £5million for a player with that amount of ability is a snip.”

Delph played just 20 times for Everton during his first season as injury limited his game time at Goodison Park.

His last appearance came back in February as muscle injuries kept him out of action.

In other Leeds United news, Whelan has touted a stunning “double signing” from a Championship rival.
