Leeds United news: Whelan reacts to Marcelo Bielsa contract update

Former Leeds United forward Noel Whelan believes there is no danger that Marcelo Bielsa will not sign a new contract with the club.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider assistant editor Russell Edge, the boyhood Leeds fan was delivering his verdict to the latest update to the Argentine manager’s situation.

Football Insider revealed last week that Bielsa is in advanced talks with Leeds to sign a new contract and that he could pen to paper this week after a breakthrough in discussions.

Bielsa’s demands are thought not to be financial but the 65-year-old wants assurances about the transfer market.

Asked whether he expects the situation to be resolved soon, Whelan told Football Insider: “I don’t think there’s any danger that he’s not going to sign a new contract. Everything will be done in each other’s time. I think there’s a respect there.

“The contract will be sorted out, it’ll be a fair one, there won’t be any haggling about it. It’s just a matter of time. As things sink in, before you know it he’ll have signed it.

“He’s more than a key person, he’s huge, he’s needed at the club and the players love him. He’s one of those managers that when you’re doing signings, players want to play for him. He’s so important for the club because he brings in players.

“Obviously, he’ll want backing, that’s the first thing a manager wants when you get promoted to the Premier League where a different level of player is going to be needed.

“I think he just wants that reassurance that they’re going to fund him for the players he wants to bring in.

“I can’t see there being any real problems here because Mr Radrizzani has always had a good relationship with Marcelo.

“Marcelo’s always had a good relationship with the board and the players but you always do want that reassurance.”

In other Leeds United news, there has been a major update to the Kiko Casilla situation after he was issued a warning about his future.
