Leeds United star Bamford hurt by lack of competition – EXCLUSIVE

The lack of competition for his place at Leeds United is “hurting” Patrick Bamford and they may sign a new striker in January, according to Gabby Agonlahor.

Speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Connor Whitley, the former England and Aston Villa forward insisted he is a big fan of Bamford and is convinced he will have a fine season for Leeds.

But Agbonlahor pointed out how the spearhead of Marcelo Bielsa’s side is similar to himself during his time at Villa under Martin O’Neill when he coasted a little due to the lack of competition for his place.

Bamford, 27, has started all nine of Leeds’ Premier League matches this season and completed the full 90 minutes in the last seven.

He has scored seven goals and supplied two assists, and was part of the side that dominated against Arsenal in last night’s 0-0 draw in which they had 24 goal attempts and hit the woodwork three times.

Asked by Football Insider if the lack of competition is hurting Bamford at Leeds, Agbonlahor said:

“Yeah, a hundred percent it’s hurting him. If you know you’re gonna play every game, sometimes it can make you a bit laid back, you know.

“I’ve probably been guilty of that in my career sometimes, when I knew I was gonna play every game under Martin O’Neil.

“When you’ve got that competition, you know someone’s waiting on the bench to come on (at) 60 minutes if you haven’t done anything, then it’s going to make you want to do more and play better because you know you need to keep your place.

“So maybe January, Leeds might bring in a striker but I still think he’ll get his goals, you know he’s a quality finisher and the way Leeds play, I mean if you look at the game last night, he hit the bar and normally he’d probably score that.

“I think he had another one where his touch was a bit heavy so he’s getting the chances, and he will score goals definitely.”

In other news, Marcelo Bielsa has been told to bring £100,000-a-week available star to Leeds United in January.
