Former Everton CEO Weighs In
Keith Wyness, Everton’s ex-chief, has voiced his opinion on Leicester City’s precarious situation, suggesting the club may not have a leg to stand on in appealing a likely Premier League points deduction.
Charges and Legal Battles
In March, Leicester City faced charges for violating Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR) for the 2022-23 season. The club didn’t waste time in taking legal action against the Premier League and EFL. However, their challenge was dismissed by an independent commission, paving the way for a hearing to decide their fate.
Potential Consequences Loom
The expected repercussion for Leicester’s breach is a points deduction, similar to the penalties Everton and Nottingham Forest incurred in the 2023-24 campaign. Wyness had previously indicated to Football Insider that the Foxes could be looking at a “minimum 12-point deduction.”
The Slim Chance of an Appeal
Discussing the possibilities of an appeal, Wyness pointed out that Leicester’s only argument might hinge on the timing of the sanctions, as they were part of the EFL when the decision was made. However, he expressed doubt about this angle, citing the authorities’ dismissal of such a claim and the lack of cooperation from Leicester’s side.
A Glimmer of Hope?
While Wyness mentioned the need to examine the details and the potential mitigating circumstances Leicester might present, he remained skeptical about the club’s chances. “This could be a slam dunk,” he concluded, offering little in the way of optimism for Leicester supporters.
