Liverpool eye loan move for top Tottenham target as a temporary alternative to Jude Bellingham

Liverpool are considering a January loan move for Tottenham Hotspur target Weston McKennie, according to recent reports.

The Reds need reinforcements in the midfield area and they have already been scanning the transfer market for more options.

However, this news will come as a blow to Spurs, who have been eyeing a move for the Juventus midfielder for some time.

Jude Bellingham is clearly a top priority for Jurgen Klopp, after dazzling with some fantastic performances at Qatar 2022.

Although, there have also been links with two other World Cup stars: Enzo Fernandez and Sofyan Ambrabat. Although, all three are likely to be available only at the end of the season.

As reported by HITC, McKennie could be targeted by Klopp as a possible interim option.

A loan deal would also be ideal as it would allow the German manager to have a look at McKennie before deciding whether to sign him on a permanent deal.

Since arriving from FC Schalke in 2021, the American has put in some sporadic good performances for Juventus, but has failed to become a regular for Massimiliano Allegri’s side.

In 91 appearances for Juve in all competitions, McKennie has scored 11 goals and provided four assists for his side, who are not exactly prolific.

This season, he has played 11 matches in Serie A, scoring and assisting once.

McKennie also put in some solid performances for the United States at the World Cup, playing in all four of their games as the USMNT reached the Round of 16.

However, it is clear that Allegri has doubts about the quality of his midfielder, having previously criticized McKennie for not converting chances in the big games.

After the 1-1 draw with Fiorentina earlier in the season, he said:

“The thing a [he has to] The absolute improvement is that when you have the opportunity to go 2-0, you have to take it. These are the key moments that decide seasons”, he told DAZN, via Goal.

“You can also miss the shot, but I didn’t see the meanness. You have to get used to it again, not everything is easy.

“That’s it, then I don’t get mad at the boys for anything. From that moment on came the corner and the equaliser, which changed everything.”

Despite falling out of favor with the Italian manager, McKennie is a strong, versatile player who can play as a defensive midfielder, a more central number eight and has also played on the right on occasion.

So for Spurs and Liverpool, he would provide cover in several positions.

Interestingly, Liverpool would have room to turn any McKennie loan into a permanent loan as the American is expected to leave Juventus in 2023.

However, this is bad news for Spurs fans as the club have been looking to sign McKennie for several months.

According to Football.London, Tottenham director of football Fabio Parataci is a big fan of McKennie and in fact wanted to sign the Juve midfielder ahead of Rodrigo Bentancur last January.

However, with Liverpool now interested, it could be up to McKennie himself to decide which Premier League club he will join in a month’s time.
