Kevin Phillips baulked at Norwich City’s £20million price tag for Jamal Lewis as Liverpool look to make the Northern Ireland international their first summer signing.
The former Sunderland and Aston Villa striker, speaking exclusively to Football Insider correspondent Dylan Childs, suggested that the Canaries slapped a steep asking price on the 22-year-old to try and offset the financial losses of their relegation.
Lewis impressed during his first Premier League campaign and is seen by Jurgen Klopp as the perfect candidate to provide cover for Andy Robertson.
Football Insider revealed on Thursday that the Reds were calling the left-back’s camp “every day” in a bid to convince him to switch to Anfield, with Crystal Palace also interested.
Phillips warned Lewis, who made 33 appearances in all competitions last season, that game time would be limited if he joined the Reds.
“He is not worth £20million in my eyes,” he told Football Insider.

“Norwich have just got relegated but they are telling Liverpool that if they want on of their players they will have to pay up.
“Lewis is going to go from playing week in, week out last season to almost certainly sitting on the bench every week at Liverpool. It is a big decision for the player. Does he turn Liverpool down to go somewhere where he gets regular game time? It is a tough one.
“In terms of £20million, that is a reaction from a club that wants to recoup as much money as they can after relegation. It surprised me when I heard that price tag.
“He is a decent player but nobody is getting ahead of Andy Robertson and Trent Alexander-Arnold for a long, long time.”
In other Liverpool news, Danny Mills has told Football Insider that he expects red-hot rising star to replace Divock Origi at Anfield next season.
