MANCHESTER UNITED and Arsenal have joined the hunt for James Rodriguez – after Real Madrid dropped their transfer demand to just £22.5million.
Los Blancos are desperate to offload their Colombia star this summer to stop him leaving for free in 12 months’ time.
Madrid newspaper Marca say Rodriguez is desperate to leave the Bernabeu after growing disillusioned with his lack of first-team opportunities.
He was on loan at Bayern Munich last season.
But this campaign he has featured in just EIGHT LaLiga games for Real.
With coronavirus hitting the purse strings at the Madrid club, president Florentino Perez wants to bring in money where he can.
That would allow boss Zinedine Zidane to focus on one big signing.
Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Manchester United’s Paul Pogba are two of the players, Los Blancos have spoken about.
The arrival of Rodriguez at the Gunners could help soften the blow of losing Aubameyang, 30.
While United boss Ole Gunnar Solskaer will not lose the opportunity of signing a world-class player for such a low price to boost his squad.
It could even make him decide to drop his interest in Borussia Dortmund’s England man Jadon Sancho as the Germans are demanding £110m.
Rodriguez is unlikely to play much in Spain next season, so it seems clear he will be sold rather than be on the sidelines picking up his huge wages.
The 28-year-old was close to a £40m move to Atletico Madrid a year ago, until Los Blancos pulled out of a deal with their neighbours at the last minute.
Everton and Wolves also want the South American and neither of those clubs would baulk at his £6.3m-a-season wages.
That might be a stumbling block for Arsenal, however.
