Man Utd legend Nicky Butt told Redknapp wonderkid Mason Greenwood is ‘one of the best he’s ever worked with’

MANCHESTER UNITED wonderkid Mason Greenwood is “one of the best Nicky Butt has ever worked with”, according to Jamie Redknapp.

The young forward, 18, has impressed since making the leap from youth team to senior squad this season.

But head of first-team development Butt is such a big fan he’s dubbed Greenwood one of the brightest talents he’s ever worked with or seen.

And let’s not forget Butt was a key part of the Class of 92 – featuring David Beckham, Ryan Giggs, Paul Scholes the Neville brothers and Co.

Redknapp revealed: “I remember talking to Nicky Butt about eight months ago.

“He said Mason Greenwood was the best young player he’s ever seen at Manchester United.

“That is some statement considering all the players they’ve produced, like the Class of 92.

“There’s nothing he can’t achieve with his pace and power.”

Earlier this year, Gary Neville revealed he believes Greenwood is the top young talent in the Premier League.

When asked who he believes is the best rising star, Neville claimed: “I would say Mason Greenwood.

“He can be anything he wants to be. He just looks like he’s got such great composure and quality. He’s great physically as well.

“If he continues to emerge like he’s shown at times this season I think Manchester United have got the real deal there.”

Greenwood has left boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer thrilled after reporting back from lockdown having packed on the muscle.

The young striker was already a favourite of the Man Utd boss – having scored 12 times in just 16 starts this season.

But Greenwood was clearly keen to make the most of his time in lockdown, returning looking “more like a man”, according to his boss.

Solskjaer said: “Mason is a young boy. He’s still 18 and this lockdown period has done him all the good in the world.

“At his age, they do develop and fill out and Mason’s looking more and more like a man, so definitely it will help him.

“Sometimes early on you could see he was a kid.

“Now in training he can use his strength better and he has done really well over the three or four weeks we have been training now.

“And his quality in front of goal has always been there and now he has muscle to push defenders away.”

Solskjaer continued: “I am not sure it was deliberate but the fitness coaches have worked really well with him.

“He has got the rest and recovery period after for him what must have been an intense first full season with the first team. He is looking good.”

Meanwhile, Old Trafford coach Quinton Fortune revealed Greenwood has been so impressive in he was left asking the youngster “are you OK?”

Solskjaer is thrilled with the way Greenwood has returned from lockdown

Fortune said: “There’s not many players in world football that are able to go both ways like Mason does. Equally, left and right foot, he’s ridiculous.

“I thought he was left-footed and then he takes penalties with his right! And I’ve seen him take a free-kick with his right foot, his left foot.

“I’m like ‘what’s wrong with you!? Just pick one! Are you OK?’”
