Man Utd’s hopes of winning Premier League rest on three players’ shoulders, claims former midfielder Ander Herrera

ANDER HERRERA reckons Manchester United’s hopes of mounting a successful Premier League title challenge could lie in the hands of three of his former teammates.

It’s been seven years since the Old Trafford giants captured England’s top football prize with their last win coming in the final year of Sir Alex Ferguson’s 26-year reign.

Ander Herrera believes the performances of Marcus Rashford, Paul Pogba, and Anthony Martial could be key to Man United’s hopes of a title win

And former coach Jose Mourinho came nearest to ending the club’s title-winning drought when he led his side to a second spot finish in 2018.

United are steadily improving under current boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who’s looking to strengthen his side with young talent.

And Herrera believes a Red Devils title charge could happen if Anthony Martial, Paul Pogba, and Marcus Rashford fulfill their potential on the pitch.

The Paris Saint Germain player told The Athletic: “They have the quality to be among the top 10 in the world.

“Why do we admire Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo, or Hazard, who I also think is one of the best in the world?

“We admire them because they keep that form for a long time.

“If they do it, they will become… maybe not Messi or Cristiano, because they are unique in the history of football… but they can be top five or top 10.

“But they have to do it for a long time and keep it up.

Ander Herrera believes Marcus Rashford’s ability to reach his potential could be key to a successful title run

“It is the same for Paul [Pogba]. Rashford is on his way to doing it. And Paul can be the best midfielder in the world if he keeps playing those games where we are all amazed by him.

“But to keep it at that level is the most difficult thing in football. To keep at it Sunday-Wednesday-Saturday, every time.

“If those three can do that, Manchester United will win the Premier League soon, for sure.

United’s push for a top-four finish gathered momentum at the start of the year before Covid-19 put football fixtures on ice.

The Old Trafford side, who are fifth in the table, are only three points behind Champions League-chasing Chelsea.

United’s last four league games before lockdown ended in two wins and two draws.

The Red Devils face Tottenham away in their first Premier League game following football’s temporary suspension.
