Match preview

The dictionary definition of dead rubber takes place at the Etihad Stadium between Manchester City and Sevilla, giving Pep Guardiola the chance to tweak his squad.

City will finish top of Group G, Sevilla will finish third, so this is little more than a blip ahead of bigger things.

In the case of City, this means Saturday afternoon’s clash with Fulham, while for the Spanish side, the Seville derby against Betis on Sunday night is not a big deal.

Sevilla have traveled with virtually a full squad, but Jorge Sampaoli surely cannot afford to pick his strongest team.

They have taken just one point from their last three league games, culminating in an embarrassing 1-0 defeat at home to Rayo Vallecano on Saturday that has left them in the bottom three.

They’re not conceding a ton of goals, although City and Dortmund have each topped four at home.

Away from Sevilla, however, he has added a couple of draws, 1-1 in Dortmund, 0-0 in Copenhagen, and could do the hat-trick of the stalemates in Manchester.

It’s not like City are at their best at the moment. They have scored four goals in their last five games and dropped a central point without the injured Erling Haaland.

Guardiola, even when given the chance, rarely makes wholesale changes, but the likes of Sergio Gómez, Rico Gómez, Cole Palmer and Julian Álvarez would expect to feature at some point in a contest that means very little.

Key statistic

Eight of Sevilla’s last eleven have scored two goals or less.
