Manchester United trigger contract extensions for Rashford, Dalot, Shaw and Fred

Manchester United have activated one-year contract extensions for Marcus Rashford, Diogo Dalot, Luke Shaw and Fred.

The United quartet would have been free to talk to foreign clubs at the start of January had extensions not been triggered before the new year, with their current deals set to expire next summer.

David de Gea’s contract at Old Trafford also expires at the end of this season, but United are in talks with the Spaniard over a new deal.

United would like the 32-year-old goalkeeper to sign a new deal on lower terms rather than trigger a one-year extension on the £375,000-a-week contract he signed in September 2019.

De Gea previously said he would be open to taking a pay cut to extend his 11-year stay in the North West.

Rashford, 25, has returned to form this season after an indifferent 2021-22 campaign.

The United striker scored eight goals in 19 games under Erik ten Hag before joining the England squad for the World Cup.

Paris Saint-Germain chairman Nasser Al-Khelaifi said earlier this month that his side would be interested in signing Rashford on a free transfer in the summer if United did not trigger the extension.

“He is another player who is really amazing,” Al-Khelaifi told Sky Sports.

“And for free? To have Rashford for free, every club would run after him, definitely.

“We don’t hide it, we talked before and… interest. But the timing was not a good time for both parties. Maybe, summer, why not?

“Today, if he is a free agent, of course we can talk to him directly, but we will not talk to him now. Let him focus on him World Cup. Then, in January, hopefully, if we’re interested we’ll talk to him.”

Dalot, 23, has reached new heights under Ten Hag by becoming the club’s first-choice right-back, while Shaw, 27, has managed to cement his place in United’s starting line-up by beating the competition from Tyrell Malacia.

Fred, 29, has only started four Premier League games this season due to the summer arrivals of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen, but remains a valuable member of the squad.

Tying Rashford down to a new deal is now seen as the priority, while Dalot and Shaw are also in line for new terms.

United return to competitive action on Wednesday when they host Championship side Burnley in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup.
